MADRID, Iowa (AP) - The city of Madrid in central Iowa has lifted a boil advisory for the city, meaning residents within the Madrid city limits can resume using tap water for drinking and food preparation without first boiling it.

But residents outside the city limits in the Xenia rural water service area are being advised to continue to boil their water.

Officials say they corrected a problem with Madrid’s filtration system detected on April 22, and completed flushing any remaining high turbidity or cloudy water out of the system Friday.

Cloudiness in the water can indicate that disease-causing organisms like bacteria viruses or parasites are present. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms.

Xenia customers are urged to check www.xeniawater.org for updates.
