LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - For some Kentucky Derby fans, there’s a science behind their betting. They like a horse’s bloodlines or past performances.

For others, it’s far less complicated and is based on factors like a favorite color or lucky number.

Shelby Kappus of Indianapolis says she looks for pink silks and horses with the number eight.

Her system paid off in the first race on Derby Day at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

The betting is brisk leading up to the 140th running of the Derby on Saturday.

Derby regular Lewis Grant of Louisville says he’s used several systems, basing his bets on silks colors, the jockeys and by studying the horses.

He says there’s one sure bet on Derby Day - the track will come out ahead.
