PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine says she wants to raise the federal minimum wage by a lesser amount than President Barack Obama’s proposal.

Collins says the current hourly minimum of $7.25 is too low but that Obama’s proposal for $10.10 is too high because the Congressional Budget Office projected that it would eliminate 500,000 jobs.

Collins told WAGM-AM that she hadn’t decided on what her preference would be. She said she’s talking to small business owners in Maine to see what they think.

Collins and independent Sen. Angus King both want compromise on the matter. Collins joined Republicans in preventing Obama’s proposal from advancing last week.
