CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A Citadel graduate is receiving the Bronze Star for meritorious service in combat more than six years after he was wounded in Iraq.

Members of The Citadel Club of Greater Washington are gathering Saturday in Springfield, Virginia, where 1st Lt. Russell Kaufmann will receive the award.

The 30-year-old Kaufmann is a 2006 graduate of The Citadel. He was hit in the neck by a sniper near Tikrit, Iraq, in January 2008.

He’s receiving the award after taking medical retirement from the Army. He continues to recover and plans a career in the law.

Saturday’s event will also honor other Citadel graduates who have been killed or wounded in the wars on terror.
