White House Adviser Valerie Jarrett said Thursday that 250,000 children go to the emergency room each year with sports-related head injuries.
In response, the Obama administration will unveil an awareness initiative that seeks to “tackle” concussions through partnerships with the NCAA, NFL, Centers for Disease Control and National Institutes of Health.
Ms. Jarrett said too many young athletes get back on the field before they follow through on their treatment for concussions and that brain injuries are not limited to football.
“We’re finding these head-related injuries across the board,” she told MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
Ms. Jarrett said the White House will be careful to promote athletics as a positive experience that keeps Americans fit, even as they raise awareness about the dangers of head injuries.
