NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Newport’s City Council is seeking a second referendum on casino-style gambling.
The Newport Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/JV2etp ) the council voted 4-3 Wednesday night to ask voters in November whether to allow table games at the Newport Grand. Voters rejected a similar measure in 2012.
A group of developers has agreed to buy the slot machine parlor and spend $40 million to turn it into a European-style casino, if they are allowed to add table games.
The referendum request now goes to the General Assembly, which is expected to approve the request. The proposed ballot question includes a restriction that would limit any gambling in the city to that site.
