TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - The city of Toledo is getting nearly $128,000 in federal grant money to clean up a site that was used for commercial and manufacturing purposes for 90 years.

The federal brownfields grant worth $127,825 will be used to clean up the 5 ½-acre site of the former Chevrolet Transmission Plant.

Blade newspaper (https://bit.ly/1gDflC4) reports that the site was used for various purposes from 1903 to 1993, including the manufacturing of auto transmission parts for nearly two decades, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Most buildings were demolished in 1993, with the rest torn down by 1999. The EPA says money will be used to remove two large underground storage tanks and address contaminated soil.

The EPA’s brownfield program aims to put dormant industrial sites back into use.
