DUBLIN (AP) - Ireland coach Martin O’Neill says his assistant Roy Keane has held talks with Celtic over the Scottish champion’s managerial vacancy.

The 42-year-old Keane briefly played for the Glasgow club at the end of his career, which the midfielder mostly spent at Manchester United.

O’Neill says Keane’s talks with Celtic owner Dermot Desmond “was just a really informal chat,” while accepting that a “club like Celtic might not come around too often.”

Celtic responded to O’Neill’s comments by saying it is “currently continuing its discussions with a number of excellent candidates. We will continue this process.”

O’Neill managed Celtic himself between 2000 and 2005. Neil Lennon quit as manager last week after winning five trophies in four years.
