PORTAGE, Ind. (AP) - Police in a second Indiana city will soon begin carrying a drug known to counter the effects of heroin overdoses.

The (Munster) Times reports (https://bit.ly/1toTyhU ) the Portage Police Department will be the first in northwestern Indiana to carry the drug naloxone. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police recently began a pilot program and it was announced Tuesday that New York City police would begin carrying naloxone.

Legislation signed by Gov. Mike Pence in March allows trained police, firefighters and other first responders to deliver naloxone or similar drugs to treat overdoses.

Portage Police Chief Troy Williams says 14 supervisors initially will be trained to administer the drug. The goal is to have every officer receive training and access to the drug.

Portage is 8 miles east of Gary.
