SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities in Syracuse have charged two people with animal cruelty after police say they moved out of their home and left their two dogs behind to starve to death.

Police tell local media that 23-year-old Corey Meyers and 27-year-old Nicole Porpiglia each were charged with two counts of animal cruelty for failing to provide proper sustenance.

Officers say the pair moved out of a house in Syracuse about a month ago and left the dogs without food or water. Someone concerned about the dogs’ welfare contacted police, who discovered the dogs dead from starvation.

Meyers and Porpiglia were arraigned in Syracuse City Criminal Court. Meyers was ordered held in the Onondaga County Jail on $5,000 bail.

It couldn’t immediately be determined if either person has a lawyer.
