CODY, Wyo. (AP) - Investigators announced Thursday they have identified the decapitated body found early this year in northern Wyoming as a 30-year-old man from Mexico.
The Park County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Juan Antonio Guerra Torres, a native of the city of Guanajuato, in central Mexico.
Duck hunters found Guerra Torres’s body near Powell on Jan. 9. He had been decapitated, shot several times and was missing his left arm.
The sheriff’s office announcement states Guerra Torres had ties to Park County and that his last known address was in Clark, about 10 miles from where his body was found.
Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lance Mathess said he couldn’t comment on how long Guerra Torres had been living in the area or whether he was employed. Mathess said the man’s relatives in Mexico had been informed of his death but said he couldn’t say whether he also had relatives in Wyoming.
In January, Mathess said local investigators believed the victim might be from Mexico because he was wearing an embroidered belt buckle featuring a horse head made in a style similar to craftsmanship from some villages in Mexico and Guatemala.
The investigation into Guerra Torres’ death continues with assistance from the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation, as well as the Cody and Powell Police Departments.
Sheriff’s detectives are asking residents who are familiar Guerra Torres or who may have information that will assist in the investigation into his death, contact the sheriff’s office at 307-527-8700.
