NEW YORK (AP) - New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s teenage children will lead a funky Brooklyn parade.
Dante and Chiara (kee-AHR’-uh) de Blasio will serve as King Neptune and Queen Mermaid at the annual Mermaid Parade on Coney Island.
The parade is June 21. The teens will be wheeled in a 1923 wicker Boardwalk Rolling Chair along the route.
The event draws hundreds of thousands of revelers to the beach each year. A number of them wear revealing, mermaid-themed costumes.
Parade organizers say the event combines “ancient mythology” and “honky-tonk seaside rituals.”
De Blasio’s offspring were highly visible during his mayoral campaign.
Dante is a Brooklyn high school student and Chiara attends a California college.
Chiara recently accepted a national award for publicly acknowledging her struggles with substance abuse.
