NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Tourists will not be able to buy sandwiches and snacks at two of Newport’s most famous mansions this summer, after the city council rejected their application for a license.
The Preservation Society of Newport County had been serving food without a license for several years at the Marble House Tea House and The Elms. It did not apply for one until this year.
The application was opposed by the Bellevue Ochre Point Neighborhood Association, which has been battling with the Preservation Society over issues including a welcome center the Preservation Society wants to build on the grounds of The Breakers.
The Newport Daily News reports the council voted 4-3 Wednesday to deny the license.
A Preservation Society lawyer says they will appeal the decision to the Superior Court.
