CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - New Hampshire’s entire Congressional delegation now agrees that Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki should resign.
Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte called on Shinseki to resign a week ago, while the three Democrats - Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, Rep. Annie Kuster and Rep. Carol Shea-Porter did so on Wednesday.
They were prompted by a scathing new report that found systemic problems in the medical system for military veterans.
Shaheen says she has tremendous respect for Shinseki and that he has made important progress, but it is clear that he has been unable to solve what she called outrageous problems at the VA.
Shea-Porter said new management is needed to “lean hard on wrongdoers and clean house wherever necessary.”
“Most of our VA employees across the country care deeply about the men and women they serve and work hard, but there is an institutional dysfunction that requires a fresh look by new people,” she said.
Kuster said no veteran should ever have trouble accessing high quality health care.
“This report, coupled with the VA’s gross failure to comply with the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee investigation into this matter, leads me to believe it is time for new leadership at the VA,” she said.
