BOSTON (AP) - Federal officials have announced $4.8 million in grants to clean up polluted urban lots - known as “brownfields” - to help revitalize local neighborhoods.
The money from the Environmental Protection Agency will go to nearly a dozen communities across the state including the cleanup of the 26-acre former Uniroyal Tire Complex in Chicopee.
From 1870 until 1980, the site was used as a lumber yard and for the manufacturing of adhesives and tires. It was also used for manufacturing, printing, and machine shops and is contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, and herbicides.
Chicopee will receive $400,000 to clean up that site and a second former industrial site.
Other communities receiving federal brownfields grants include Boston, Fitchburg, Holyoke, Lowell, New Bedford, Salem, Somerville, Springfield, Taunton and the Franklin Regional Council of Governments.
