SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - The names of more than 37,000 New Yorkers who died while serving in the military during World War II are now searchable online thanks to volunteers and the New York State Military Museum.
The state Division of Military and Naval Affairs says nine volunteers spent the past year going through the U.S. Army and Navy casualty books and inputting the information. A typical entry for military members includes name, service number, branch of service, how they died and where they are buried.
Most of New York state’s war dead - 31,215 soldiers and airmen - served in the Army and the Army Air Forces. Another 6,270 who died served in the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.
The database can be found via the veterans link on the military affairs website: www.dmna.ny.gov .
