LOS ANGELES (AP) - A man who said he was beaten by sheriff’s deputies while visiting his brother at a Los Angeles County jail will receive more than $1 million to settle a civil rights lawsuit.
The Los Angeles Times (https://lat.ms/SiIRBJ ) says lawyers for Gabriel Carrillo announced the settlement Thursday.
Carrillo said he was attacked in February 2011 at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles after bringing a cellphone to a waiting area - a violation of jail rules. The suit says deputies handcuffed Carrillo to a chair and beat and pepper-sprayed him until he blacked out.
He faced battery and other charges, but they were later dropped.
The case was among those the FBI examined in a probe of alleged jail guard abuses and resulted in criminal charges against five employees.
