NEW YORK (AP) - A Bronx jury has awarded $172 million to a girl who suffered brain damage while waiting for an ambulance.
The New York Times (https://nyti.ms/1tSZWzZ ) says the jury determined that Fire Department paramedics could be held liable for waiting to take the girl immediately to a hospital.
The city’s Law Department said it would appeal.
Tiffany Applewhite was 12 when she went into shock in 1998 after a private nurse gave her a shot of steroids for an eye condition.
A trial court at first at dismissed the family’s lawsuit. It ruled the family failed to prove the city had a special duty to take care of Tiffany by responding to their 911 call.
The appellate division disagreed. The Court of Appeals upheld the ruling last year.
