CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - Police have arrested a Cedar Rapids man suspected of stealing wheelchairs from an organization that holds sports and recreation activities for those with disabilities.

Cedar Rapids television station KCRG reported Thursday (https://bit.ly/1jwhudA ) that 39-year-old Rick Allen Smith is charged with felony theft and criminal mischief.

Police say officers searched Smith’s house and found stolen property, including the wheelchairs. Investigators say the majority of the chairs had been chopped up and destroyed.

The arrest comes after Sportability of Iowa reported its trailer, packed with a dozen specialized wheelchairs worth between $36,000 and $60,000, was stolen in December from the parking lot of Stoney Point YMCA in Cedar Rapids.
