NEW ORLEANS — Phil Robertson, the patriarch of the “Duck Dynasty” television series, warned the GOP that it “can’t be right for America if you are wrong with God.”
“If the country does not turn to God at a fairly rapid clip we are going to lose the United States of America,” said Mr. Robertson, before speaking out against abortion.
Mr. Robertson become a household name after he was suspended last year from the show for sharing in an interview his unfiltered opinion on sin, gays and the Jim Crow South.
His remarks capped the opening day of the three-day Republican Leadership Conference in New Orleans, which featured speeches from Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
Mr. Robertson spoke for about 40 minutes, sparking both laughter and cries of “Amen” from those in attendance.
He said Obamacare was another way for the government “to suck money out of you,” and said that the Christian religion must be the basis of any government. And he called the separation of church and state a “lie.”

He also assured the hundreds of Republicans in attendance that he has not let his fame go to his head, saying he is not chasing long-legged “chicks” in Hollywood. Mr. Robertson said he remains happily married to his wife “Miss Kay.”
He said that, about once a week, he and his wife make their way to his bedroom, where they are “basically trying to get it over with without getting hurt.”
“I will tell you something else. It is biblical. One man and woman for life,” he said.
