RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The National Weather Service in Rapid City says the tornado that touched down in the central Black Hills was an EF-1.
The weather service on Wednesday said winds reached 110 mph. Severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon spawned the tornado.
The twister was on the ground for 2.5 miles and was 300 yards wide. It uprooted and snapped many large Ponderosa Pine trees and caused minor roof damage to a house. No injuries were reported.
The weather service says an employee in the Black Hills National Forest spotted the funnel cloud touch ground about 1:15 p.m. MDT.
The storm system also produced hail up to the size of golf balls near Keystone, Hill City, Pactola Reservoir and Sheridan Lake.
