BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - USA Hockey has selected Buffalo to host both the under-18 women’s and sledge hockey world championships next year.

The eight-team women’s championship will be held from Jan. 4-12. The sledge hockey championship will be held April 24-May 2, and also feature eight nations.

The selection of Buffalo, announced Wednesday, strengthens USA Hockey’s ties with the NHL’s Sabres and the city as a hockey market. The increased interest in Buffalo coincides with the Sabres building a two-rink entertainment and hotel complex, which will be connected to their downtown arena.

The rinks are scheduled to open in September.

The Sabres are already hosting USA Hockey’s next two annual All-American Prospects games. Buffalo also is a candidate to host the 2018 world junior championships.
