The U.S. Chamber of Commerce lent its muscle Wednesday to a pair of Republican Senate challengers ahead of party contests in Georgia and Iowa.
Hoping to beat back hard-right favorites in the primaries, the chamber has been touting establishment Republican candidates that have a better chance of winning in general elections.
In the South, the chamber enlisted former Georgia University football star Herschel Walker to tout Rep. Jack Kingston over businessman David Perdue in the July runoff to decide which Republican faces Democrat Michelle Nunn to fill the seat of retiring Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss.
“I care deeply about our Georgia’s future,” the ex-pro and Heisman Trophy winner said. “That’s why I wanted my friend Jack Kingston, carrying the ball for us in Washington.”
The chamber said it is “doubling down” on its support for Mr. Kingston after he survived the May 20 primary.
In Iowa, the chamber says Joni Ernst should emerge from a crowded GOP primary on Tuesday to take on Rep. Bruce Braley, who is seeking to keep retiring Sen. Tom Harkin’s seat in Democratic hands.
The 30-second spot notes Ms. Ernst’s farmland upbringing and services in the military during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
