JACKSON, Mich. (AP) - Some proposed public safety budget cuts in Jackson are expected to be avoided after union officials agreed to health care concessions.
The Jackson Citizen Patriot reports (https://bit.ly/1k03U8g ) City Council on Tuesday night approved a spending plan that includes $300,000 in cuts to public safety. Earlier in the day, union officials approved concessions to save the city about $604,000 in the fiscal year starting July 1.
City Manager Patrick Burtch says he didn’t have enough time to revise the city’s proposed budget before it was adopted by City Council. The newspaper says a number of planned cuts, including layoffs of a police officer and firefighter, are expected to be avoided.
Four administrative positions and a Jackson Police Department K-9 unit also are at risk in the budget process.
