JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt is criticizing President Barack Obama’s announcement that he will withdraw almost all troops from Afghanistan over the next couple of years.

There are currently about 32,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan. Under Obama’s plan announced Tuesday, that would be reduced to 9,800 by the end of this year and to fewer than 1,000 by the end of 2016.

Blunt criticized Obama for announcing the reductions so far in advance, saying the president cannot know what the situation will be in Afghanistan two years from now. The Republican senator from Missouri serves on defense authorization and appropriations committees.
