SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) - Santa Monica has hired an engineering firm to help the city identify older buildings potentially at risk of collapse in a major earthquake.

The Los Angeles Times reports (https://lat.ms/1phQ6Ia ) that the City Council voted Tuesday to spend about $91,000 to hire Degenkolb Engineers.

Once the buildings have been surveyed and cataloged, owners would be notified and given a chance to show their structure does not need seismic strengthening.

The survey does not include single-family homes and will focus on buildings constructed before 1996.
