NEW YORK (AP) - New York City may place warning signs in some school zones that have speed cameras.
It also may put them in some areas that don’t have the cameras.
Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg tells The Wall Street Journal (https://on.wsj.com/1nU29aU ) that city officials are “open to experimentation” when it comes to deterrence.
A speed-camera pilot program in New York City has raised more than $1 million in fines since January.
Now, the number of cameras is set to increase from 20 to 140.
The state Senate has authorized an extra 200 speed cameras in or near school zones across New York City and Long Island.
Nassau County will have up to 56 more cameras. Suffolk County will get another 69.
Speeders caught by the cameras will be mailed a $50 ticket.
