RICHMOND, Maine (AP) - Police say a Connecticut-bound tractor trailer spilled hundreds of potatoes near Interstate 295 in Richmond, Maine, after swerving to avoid hitting a moose.

The trailer, driven by 63-year-old Marc Benoit of Hampden, Massachusetts, crashed while driving on the southbound side of the highway Tuesday night. Police say the box portion of the truck split in half, spilling the load on the side of the highway. Benoit suffered minor injuries to his legs and was taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick.

Benoit told state troopers he swerved to avoid a moose in the southbound lane in Richmond. Police say the vehicle went off the median side of the road, traveled several hundred feet, struck a crossover embankment and came to rest on the other side of the highway.
