BARTON, Vt. (AP) - A man was shot by two Vermont state troopers early Wednesday morning after he allegedly stole a vehicle, led officers on a chase and rammed two police cruisers, police said.

Eric Jackson, 27, of Lyndonville was listed in stable condition Wednesday morning at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Police said he was wanted on escape status from the Department of Corrections; further information was not immediately available.

Police said Jackson stole the vehicle shortly after 2 a.m. from a home in Sutton. After a lengthy pursuit, Jackson stopped in Barton, changed directions by accelerating in reverse and repeatedly rammed two state police cruisers, causing extensive damage and threatening the troopers, police said. Both troopers discharged their weapons; they were not hurt.

The troopers were placed on paid administrative leave, a common practice following police-involved shootings. A Vermont State Police investigation is being conducted in cooperation with the offices of the Caledonia County and Orleans County state’s attorneys and the Vermont attorney general’s office.

The case will be reviewed independently by both the attorney general’s office and the Orleans County state’s attorney once the investigation is completed, police said.
