JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Environmental Protection Agency is awarding brownfield grants to five communities in Mississippi.

A brownfield site is property where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by the presence or possible presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant. The site is designated by the EPA.

EPA announced the grants Wednesday.

The Mississippi brownfield grant recipients are:

- Biloxi: $200,000 assessment grant for petroleum and $200,000 assessment grant for hazardous substances.

- Corinth: $200,000 assessment grant for petroleum and $200,000 assessment grant for hazardous substances.

- Gautier $200,000 assessment grant for petroleum and $200,000 assessment grant for hazardous substances

- Laurel: $200,000 assessment grant for petroleum and $200,000 assessment grant for hazardous substances.

- Monroe County: $350,000 assessment grant for hazardous substances.
