Donald Trump has added a new scenario to his birtherism claims: Perhaps President Obama was indeed born in America but only pretended to be Kenyan in college to receive financial aid.
The billionaire told attendees at a National Press Club luncheon on Tuesday that he doesn’t regret, “not even a little bit,” that he publicly demanded the president produce his long-form birth certificate, which he eventually did, the Daily Mail reported.
He said there were three scenarios to explain Mr. Obama’s past: “Either it’s fine, or he was born in Kenya, or in my opinion there’s a very good chance he was born here, and said he was born in Kenya. Because if you were born in Kenya, you got into colleges, and you got aid. Very simple.”
Mr. Trump’s suspicions of the president stemmed from a book agency’s 1991 biography of the president, who was listed as being from Kenya. A former editor said in 2012 that it was simply “a fact-checking error,” but Mr. Trump remained unconvinced.
Ahead of the 2012 election, “The Apprentice” star offered Mr. Obama a $5 million gift to any charity of his choice if he were to produce his passport and college records, but he never did. Mr. Trump said he even upped that offer to $50 million.
“I never heard from him,” Mr. Trump said Tuesday.
