ALICE, Texas (AP) - It’ll be a day of damage assessment and cleanup in the South Texas town of Alice after a savage thunderstorm has roared through.

The storm hit Alice, about 40 miles west of Corpus Christi, about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when the area was under a tornado warning. The storm toppled large trees and utility poles, shattered windows and windshields, and left much of the town in the dark.

As many as 53 percent of the 15,000 American Electric Power-Texas customers in Alice and surrounding Jim Wells County lost power. About 42 percent were still in the dark as of 11 p.m.

There were no reports of injuries. Jim Wells County officials say it’s unclear if a tornado caused the damage, but a National Weather Service team will determine that Wednesday.
