SEATTLE (AP) - Los Angeles Angels reliever Sean Burnett is expected to miss the rest of the season after tearing a ligament in his pitching elbow.
Burnett was diagnosed with having a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow on Wednesday, a day after being removed from the game in the seventh inning after throwing a pitch to Seattle’s Michael Saunders. Burnett had just made his debut with the Angels last weekend after having elbow surgery last August.
Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Burnett would have a second opinion by Dr. James Andrews next week. Andrews performed the surgery on Burnett’s elbow last year.
With Burnett going on the disabled list, the Angels recalled right-hander Matt Shoemaker to start Thursday’s series finale against Seattle. Wade LeBlanc, the Angels’ expected starter on Thursday, will now work out of the bullpen.
