SEATTLE (AP) - The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a total of nearly $10 million to improve ferry facilities in Seattle, Mukilteo and Edmonds.

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, who chairs the Senate Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, announced the federal grants Tuesday.

The grants were awarded to the state Department of Transportation and the King County transportation department.

Murray says the money will help maintain and modernize ferry facilities around Puget Sound.
