HONOLULU (AP) - A group committed to protecting social security is endorsing U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz in Hawaii’s U.S. Senate race.
The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare announced its endorsement Tuesday.
The group says Schatz is the only candidate who has stated opposition to plans that would cut benefits to seniors to protect tax breaks for corporations and wealthy individuals.
Schatz is running against Rep. Colleen Hanabusa in the August primary. Hanabusa’s campaign spokesman Peter Boylan says she has voted repeatedly to protect Social Security and Medicare.
Schatz last year co-introduced a bill to expand and enhance Social Security by removing the wage cap used to calculate benefits.
Boylan says Schatz voted against Social Security when he approved the Bipartisan Budget Act, which extended Medicare cuts.
