LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Sparrow Health System has more than doubled the size of its surgical center in a $15 million expansion at Sparrow Hospital.
The revamped center includes 10 new operating rooms at the hospital’s main campus in Lansing.
At 16,000 square feet, the facility is more than twice the size of the hospital’s previous surgical area and features space-saving equipment, touch-screen monitors and floors designed to reduce fatigue, according to the Lansing State Journal ( https://on.lsj.com/1oOPQjG ).
It also includes the hospital’s first frozen specimen lab.
“Big” is the operative word for the new surgical suites, said Ara Pridjian, medical director for cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at Sparrow.
While the older rooms were “a very, very tight squeeze,” the new ones are “like a venue for a wedding or Mission Control in Houston,” said Pridjian, one of five hospital officials who spoke during a brief ceremony last week.
The new surgical center is part of more than $250 million in construction by Lansing-based Sparrow over the past three years.
More renovations will occur in phases, including new pre- and post-surgical facilities and a post-anesthesia care unit, Sparrow officials said.
