MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - The ban on beach tents in Myrtle Beach has started and some people are not happy about it.
The city’s ban took effect on Memorial Day and will run through Labor Day, The Sun News of Myrtle Beach (https://bit.ly/1gwWdFI ) reported.
Donna Shadowan of Fairmont, North Carolina, said the beach umbrellas rented on the beach are not big enough for a family.
Shadowan and her family had put up a tent until a lifeguard told them tents were no longer allowed. She said learning of the law after setting up the tent ruined her day.
“It’s nice to come out on the beach,” Shadowan said. “But, we need the shelter. If you want tourists to continue to come here, you ought to let us have our way on some things like tents.”
North Myrtle Beach and Atlantic Beach banned the beach tents from May 15 to Sept. 15. Horry County has a year-round ban.
Lifeguards near a pier just outside Myrtle Beach said Monday there had not been many issues with the new ordinance that took effect April 16 and said those who brought tents did not argue when informed of the ban.
Officials say the tents make it hard for emergency vehicles to respond when needed.
