LOS ANGELES (AP) - The nation’s busiest sea port is set to get a new leader.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced Tuesday his nomination of a shipping line executive to be the next executive director of the Port of Los Angeles.

Gene Seroka would still need to be confirmed by the City Council.

Seroka works for American Presidents Line. APL is a major international shipping line that has a terminal at a port which itself increasingly faces competition both from the Port of Long Beach next door, as well as ports in the eastern U.S.

The Port of Los Angeles is a major economic engine in Southern California, both for the thousands of jobs on the waterfront as well as the thousands more generated by trade, particularly with Asia.
