Sen. Elizabeth Warren will campaign for Sen. Jeff Merkley on Wednesday in Portland, lending some Democratic star power to the incumbent Oregonian as he tries to stave off a challenge from Republican nominee Monica Wehby.
Ms. Warren, Massachusetts Democrat who recently authored a book about her rise in politics and taking on the financial industry, is rumored to be a 2016 presidential alternative to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, although she herself has shown little interest in a White House bid.
The Merkley campaign called Mrs. Warren “a champion for America’s working families.” At Wednesday’s fundraiser, she will be introduced at the Portland Hilton by Sen. Ron Wyden, Oregon Democrat and new chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.
Mr. Merkley faces an aggressive challenge from Ms. Wehby, a pediatric neurosurgeon.
The Republican has faced unflattering headlines about accusations she harassed an ex-husband and former boyfriend, although the campaign has decried the reports as misleading smear tactics and character assassination.
