PITTSBURGH (AP) - Samuel Chamberlin Newbury, the longtime producer of the “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” public television show, has died.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (https://bit.ly/1nPTnKT ) reports Newbury was 69 when he died Thursday of cancer in his Pittsburgh home.
Newbury was from Concord, Massachusetts, and got his start in television as a cameraman for Jim Lehrer, the eventual host of the Public Broadcasting Service’s “NewsHour,” at KERA-TV in Dallas.
Newbury came to Pittsburgh’s public television station, WQED, as a cameraman in 1974. He wound up producing the Mister Rogers show in 1981.
Newbury later also became director of production for Family Communications, the production company now known as Fred Rogers Co., where he helped make programs to help children and families deal with prejudice, illness, and various other problems and social issues.
A funeral is planned Sunday.
