CHICAGO (AP) - A new report from the city of Chicago concludes most guns recovered in crimes in the city were first sold in states with less stringent gun laws.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office released the 15-page report Tuesday along with Chicago police and the University of Chicago.
The reports’ release comes the day before Emanuel plans to introduce an ordinance largely limiting where gun stores could open in Chicago and under what conditions.
The report finds that nearly 60 percent of guns used to commit crimes in Chicago between 2009 and 2013 were initially bought in states with weaker gun regulations.
It also says nearly 20 percent of all guns found at crime scenes were sold by four local dealers. Three are in suburban Cook County and one is in Gary, Indiana.
