PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Sen. Jack Reed will accompany President Barack Obama to the U.S. Military Academy’s commencement at West Point, New York.
The Rhode Island Democrat is a 1971 West Point graduate. He will fly with the president from Washington for Wednesday’s ceremony.
In his graduation speech Obama is expected to make the case for an approach to global problems that relies on international consensus. On Tuesday, Obama announced plans for keeping nearly 10,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan after this year, then withdrawing virtually all by the close of 2016. He visited troops in Afghanistan over the Memorial Day weekend.
Reed, a former Army Ranger, left active duty in 1979 and retired from the reserves in 1991. He was elected to the Senate in 1996 after practicing law and serving in the Rhode Island legislature and the U.S. House.
