SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - The Civil War general credited with saving the day for the Union at a major battle and announcing the end of slavery in Texas is the subject of the next free talk at the New York State Military Museum.

Former Schenectady Daily Gazette reporter Robert Conner will talk about Union Gen. Gordon Granger, a native of Wayne County, New York and an 1821 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

At the Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863, Granger’s generalship helped lead the Union to victory. On June 19, 1865, Granger issued the order announcing that slavery was dead in Texas. “Juneteenth” is an official holiday in Texas and many other states.

Conner, author of book on Granger, will give his talk at 2 p.m. Saturday at the museum, located in downtown Saratoga Springs.
