WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. (AP) - Workers are planning to use a new construction method on two Interstate 91 bridges carrying traffic over U.S. 5 in Vermont.
It’s called lateral slide construction.
The Burlington Free Press reports (https://bfpne.ws/1gwWjgy) it has four major steps: building new bridge supports under old bridges, building new bridges next to the old bridges, demolishing the old bridges, then sliding the new bridges onto the new supports.
Advocates say it’s a safer way to build, moving construction away from traffic.
Estimates for the project are from $3 million to $6 million. Federal money will cover 90 percent of the cost.
Both of the I-91 bridges in Hartford were built in 1966. Age, weather and use have taken their toll.
