LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Los Angeles County Sheriff’s officials say a deputy has been shot and a suspect is dead following a confrontation in Long Beach.

The Long Beach Press Telegram reports (https://bit.ly/1kaPz33) the deputy was shot in the stomach Monday morning near the Long Beach-Compton border. He was stable and conscious before undergoing surgery, and was expected to survive.

Gomez said the deputy and his partner approached a cyclist who was in his early 20s when he sped away. A short chase ensued, followed by a struggle where Gomez said the suspect tried to reach for one of the deputies’ guns.

The suspect, whose name was not released, died at the scene. Gomez said he was carrying a semi-automatic firearm.

The deputy’s partner was not injured. The shooting was under investigation.
