NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A federal judge says former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin will have to forfeit more than $501,000 as a result of his conviction on bribery and other charges.
U.S. District Judge Helen Berrigan issued the order Tuesday. Nagin was convicted in February on 20 counts including bribery, fraud, money laundering and conspiracy. The charges stemmed from his two terms as mayor from 2001 to 2010.
Prosecutors sought forfeiture of $501,200. Nagin’s attorney said the amount should be less because Nagin shared liability with others. Berrigan, however, approved the government’s outline of the value of money, goods and services Nagin received from people who secured lucrative city work.
Nagin also seeks a delay of his June 11 sentencing. The 20 charges carry maximum sentences ranging from three to 20 years.
