AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Avondale Mayor Marie Lopez Rogers is resigning so she can run for a position on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.

Rogers announced her plans Tuesday.

She’s eyeing the supervisor’s seat in District 5 that was recently vacated by Mary Rose Wilcox, who’s running for Congress.

Rogers has been on the Avondale City Council since 1996 and was appointed the city’s mayor in January 2006.

She was re-elected twice and her term in office in December 2015.

The Avondale City Council has 31 days to fill the vacancy.

According to the city’s charter, Avondale’s vive mayor will assume the duties of the mayor in the interim.

The council will discuss the appointment of a new mayor at its June 2 meeting.
