CHICAGO (AP) - Authorities have identified the 19-month-old girl who was struck and killed by a bus when she ran into the street on Chicago’s South Side.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office says that Cherish Meyers of Chicago was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital shortly after Monday’s accident.

A Chicago Transit Authority bus struck the girl at about 3:20 p.m. on Monday. Police say the bus driver apparently tried to swerve out of the way to avoid the child but was unable to do so.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the driver was taken to an area hospital for observation.
