Some Republican lawmakers want the party to issue a “policy manifesto” ahead of the midterm elections so they can highlight their agenda and priorities for voters, a new report said.
With the Senate there for the taking this November, closed-door talks among the GOP’s 45 senators have focused on an outline of what they stand for and hope to achieve with a potential majority, Politico said. It is a way to push back at Democrats who say the GOP is the “party of no.”
Sens. John Barrasso of Wyoming and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina have touted the idea as a follow-up to the GOP’s “Contract with America,” which the party used to take over the House in 1994, Politico reported.
But some of their colleagues, particularly those up for re-election, are reluctant to forge a plan that would offer Democrats a new line of attack.
Politico said these lawmakers would prefer to highlight the shortcomings of incumbent Democrats and President Obama.
