MIAMI (AP) - City of Miami officials have declared the owners of a Venezuelan television station “persona non grata.”

The Miami Herald reports (https://hrld.us/1m2hhSf ) that the commissioners voted unanimously in favor of a resolution denouncing Globovision’s principals for spending millions on high-end properties in Miami while remaining quiet on human rights abuses in Venezuela.

The resolution was drafted by former Miami Mayor Joe Carollo. Carollo was recently fired as the city manager of Doral, which has a large Venezuelan community largely opposed to the government of President Nicolas Maduro.

Carollo said last week that Globovision ignores student-led protests and stifles information about abuses.

The resolution is a symbolic gesture. A “persona non grata” declaration is traditionally used by governments to oust foreign diplomats.
